Winchester 1885 Low Wall .410 Bore #103647
This is a Winchester M1885 Low wall , manufactured 1918, that was professionally converted to .410 Ga. (2.5" shells) by William Kirk, the consignor's great Uncle. He started out as a machinist in the mines in cripple Creek Colo. during the gold rush, and later became a gunsmith in Encampment, Jackson Hole, and Rawlins, Wyoming in the early 1900's. He made these for sheep herders where there was a market for them. Lever-action, drop breech. 26 1/2" octagonal to round barrel with steel bead, and rear sight insert grooved for sighting. Lower barrel is stamped "410", "12mm" and "W.M. Kirk". ".22" is lined out, partially obscured by sight base insert just froward of the receiver. Serial number on lower tang. Winchester markings on upper tang. Bore appears excellent/bright, action is smooth/tight. Drop in choke gauge shows a bit more open bored than CYL. Wood is very good with normal scratches/dings, contrasting black painted fore cap. Factory checkered plastic buttplate. Blued metal finish is about 60% with scratches. handling/edge wear with scattered areas of pin-prick pitting, rust spots on the upper barrel. Great Western History, can be researched in newspapers, and the Wyoming Project. NRA Condition-Good as C& R Firearm
