Winchester 1885 Low Wall .410 Bore #17099
This is a Winchester M1885 Low wall, manufactured 1887, that was professionally converted to .410 Ga. (2.5" shells) by William Kirk, the consignor's great Uncle. He started out as a machinist in the mines in cripple Creek Colo. during the gold rush, and later became a gunsmith in Encampment, Jackson Hole, and Rawlins, Wyoming in the early 1900's. He made these for sheep herders where there was a market for them. Lever-action, drop breech. 24 3/4" octagonal to round barrel with brass bead, and rear sight insert grooved for sighting. Winchester barrel markings are mostly gone, but "chester" is seen where the barrel turns round, showing he turned the barrel. Lower barrel is stamped "410", and "W.M. Kirk". Patent date and serial number on lower tang. Bore appears excellent/bright, action is smooth/tight. Drop in choke gauge shows a bit more open bored than CYL. Wood is very good with normal scratches/dings, contrasting black painted fore cap. Curved steel buttplate. Metal finish has turned a dark brown patina, with traces of blue. Great Western History, can be researched in newspapers, and the Wyoming Project. NRA Condition-Very Good as Antique Firearm
