Winchester 3rd Model 1873 .38-40 SN: 132216
"Special Order" rifle includes a letter from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center listing original factory configuration. Features 24" octagon barrel, half length "button" magazine, buckhorn sights, checkered pistol grip wrist, fancy inlay at grip bottom, checkered forend, finger lever latch, dust cover, steel crescent buttplate with sliding cover for butt trap. The Winchester records indicate this rifle originally had a rubber buttplate, making it appear that the current stock is a replacement (and perhaps handguard as well). Bore is fair to good condition, bright with strong rifling, scattered tiny pits throughout. Barrel displays an even dull medium gray coloration, with patches of pitting, and several noted dents. Action retains an even brownish gray color, thinning at high spots and where handled, bare metal at sharp edges. Nosecap is mostly brown color with a large patch of grayish bare metal on the right side. Buttplate color matches other metal, shows pitting at and around heel, rust at trap door. Screw slots are generally good with several showing slight to moderate marring. Wood is overall good condition, solid with visible grain, some oil staining where wood touches metal, many small dents and scratches throughout. Fair wood to metal fit at buttstock, some gaps at heel and slight wood loss at toe, small chip from grip. Forend has several visible repaired cracks, chip missing at nosecap. Checkering is crisp, possibly re-cut or deepened. Action is smooth. Model marking on top tang is faded and uneven depth. Two line barrel address is mostly crisp & readable with some patina affecting the forward letters. "38 Cal" marking on bottom of cartridge lifter is shallow, partly eroded. Condition is NRA Very Good *** Antique Firearm ***
