'Third Model' Scarce antique lever action repeating rifle chambered in .22 Short Rimfire, manufactured circa 1888. The Winchester 1873 .22 Rimfire rifle was the first .22 caliber repeating rifle produced in American and suffered diminutive sales due to the preference of larger-caliber rifled at the time. Production numbers of the .22 caliber model is estimated to be 19,552 which accounts for a mere 2.78% of the total production. Features a blued 24 5/16" round barrel marked ""WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860", dovetailed front sight with German silver blade, semi-buckhorn adjustable rear sporting sight, full-length tube magazine, smooth trigger, knurled hammer spur, sliding dust cover with serrations along the rear edges, smooth walnut forend with metal cap, and straight grip shoulder stock with crescent metal buttplate. The barrel and magazine tube are blued with the finish turned to a smooth aged brown patina. The remainder of the metal surfaces display an old nickel plated finish with approximately 70% plating intact overall. The action performs well, the bore is fair, markings are faint but legible and the refinished wood stocks are good with small losses, minor hairline cracks extending from the upper tang & some shrinkage around the buttplate.
