'Third Model' Scarce antique lever action repeating rifle chambered in .22 Short Rimfire, manufactured circa 1892. The Winchester 1873 .22 Rimfire rifle was the first .22 caliber repeating rifle made in American and suffered diminutive sales due to the preference of larger-caliber rifled at the time. Production numbers of the .22 caliber model is estimated to be 19,552 which accounts for a mere 2.78% of the total production. Features a 24 3/8" octagon barrel marked ""WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860-", dovetailed front sight with German silver blade, semi-buckhorn adjustable rear sporting sight, full-length tube magazine, smooth trigger, knurled hammer spur, sliding dust cover with serrations along the rear edges, smooth walnut forend with metal cap, and straight grip shoulder stock with inlayed oval escutcheon on the right side & crescent metal buttplate. The upper tang has been drilled for a vernier sight leaving three holes without filler screws. Rifle exhibits little to no remaining finish with the majority of the metal surfaces displaying an aged mottled grey/brown patina. The action is in good working order however a closed dust cover will not move rearward automatically when the action is worked, the bore is fairly smooth with scattered pitting, markings are clear and the wood stocks are good.
