Winchester Model 1873 Deluxe .44-40 #71105
Scare second model 1873 deluxe rifle with rare 28” barrel, manufactured in New Haven, CT circa 1881. According to James Gordon’s book “Winchester’s New Model of 1873” as few as 118 rifles were made with this barrel length in the .44-40 chambering. Features a blued 28" octagonal barrel, full-length magazine tube, dovetailed front sight with German silver blade, elevation adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sporting sight, case hardened receiver, sliding dust cover with serrations on the rear, single set trigger, knurled hammer spur, hand checkered fancy walnut forend with metal cap and hand checkered fancy walnut straight grip shoulder stock with trapdoor crescent buttplate. Includes a copy of a Cody Firearms Museum/Winchester factory letter confirming its special features as original. Rifle retains approximately 20% of its original blued finish on the barrel and magazine tube with the majority of the finish forward of the forend and a smooth aged brown patina comprising the balance. The case hardened receiver displays trace amounts of color in the protected areas with the majority of the metal surfaces turned to a mottled grey/brown patina. Action is mechanically sound, the markings are crisp, the bore shows good rifling with minor pitting and the fancy walnut stocks are good with some dings/impressions & what appears to be 1.5” hairline fracture on the left side of the wrist. Condition is NRA Very Good. ***Antique Firearm***
