Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle, #233240B, .22 Short RF cal., 24'' octagonal barrel, with Rocky Mountain-style sights marked with maker's name, address and King's Improvement 1856-60 patent dates on top flat, and ''22 Short'' at breech; receiver marked ''Model 1873'' flanked by feathered brackets on top tang, the serial number on lower tang, and ''22 Cal. Short'' on brass cartridge lifter; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock with crescent buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1887. Condition is very good. Barrel retains perhaps 20% original blue and an otherwise smooth brownish patina, receiver with 15% blue in protected areas, case hardened loop operating lever, hammer and buttplate mostly silvered and darkened. Stocks are solid and generally smooth with just light marks from age and use. The Model 1873 in .22 rimfire is loaded, not through the conventional right-side loading gate, but through the front of the magazine tube with its distinctive knurled cap; it is considered a scarce variant. Action is smooth; bore is shiny with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,000-$2,000. (Antique)
