Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine, 3rd Model, #178249A. .44 WCF (.44-40) cal., 20'' round barrel with standard sights, marked with maker's name, address and King's patent dates in two lines on top flat, and ''44 W.C.F.'' at breech; full-length mag tube is retained by a barrel band; receiver with loop operating lever, right-side loading, top ejection and saddle ring and stud at left, marked ''Model 1873'' followed by feather-like flourishes on upper tang and ser. no. on lower, brass cartridge lifter is unmarked; two-piece oil-stained walnut stocks, forend with single barrel band, buttstock with steel carbine buttplate having a sliding door opening to trap in butt. Mfg'd ca. 1885, with full-blued finish but for case hardened lever, hammer and buttplate. Condition is very good. Barrel and mag tube retain traces of blue in protected places turning smooth brown, the balance of the metal generally an overall gunmetal gray having scattered discoloration and erosion (esp. at frame top and buttplate), and darkened case colors. Stocks are sound showing attractive grain, minor handling marks (shallow gouge at bottom of forend) and smooth finish. Edges and markings are sharp; action is smooth; bore is dark showing deep erosion and good rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)*
