Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Short Rifle, 3rd Model, #591120B, .38 WCF (.38-40) cal., 20'' octagonal barrel with standard sights, marked with maker's name, address and King's patent dates in two lines on top flat, and ''38 W.C.F.'' at breech; 1/4-magazine below; receiver with loop operating lever, right-side loading and top ejection, marked ''Model 1873 / Winchester/Trade Mark'' on upper tang and ser. no. on lower, brass cartridge lifter is marked ''38 Cal''; two-piece oil-stained walnut stocks, the forend with steel nosecap, the buttstock with steel crescent buttplate having a sliding door opening to trap. Mfg'd ca. 1905, with full-blued finish but for case hardened lever, hammer and buttplate. Condition is very good. Metal surfaces retain slight traces of blue (50% blue to mag tube) but generally an overall gunmetal gray having scattered discoloration and erosion (esp. to front 8'' of barrel), and darkened case colors. Stocks are sound showing attractive grain, minor handling marks and smooth finish. Sliding dust cover is missing. Edges and markings are sharp; action is sticky but works; bore is clean showing overall light frosting and fine rifling. This is a most unusual 73 rifle, with its carbine-length octagonal barrel and short mag tube. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (C&R)
