Antique Winchester Model 1885 High-Wall Single Shot Sporting Rifle, #59596, .38-55 CF cal., blued 29'' medium-weight octagonal barrel, with dovetailed long blade front and adjustable buckhorn rear sights, marked with the maker's name and address in two lines ahead of rear sight and ''38-55'' at breech; case hardened ''Thinside'' receiver with serpentine operating lever that opens dropping-block action is marked ''Pat. Oct. 7th 79'' and ''59596'' on lower tang; oil-stained walnut Schnabel forend with buffalo horn tip, and buttstock with crescent buttplate. Condition is near fine. Barrel retains approx. 70% original blue, thinning and mixing with age patina; receiver, lever and buttplate with traces of case hardening. Stocks show minor handling marks but are smooth, solid, still fit ''proud'' to the metal and have good color. Action is smooth and tight; bore is shiny with deep rifling. Designed by John M. Browning, the Model 1885 was the first single-shot Winchester rifle. Est.: $800-$1,600. (Antique)
