Winchester Model 1886 Lightweight Lever Action Repeating Rifle, #151640, .33 WCF cal., 24'' blued tapered round barrel with integral block-blade front and adjustable buckhorn sporting rear sights is marked on left side ''Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co./New Haven, Conn. U.S.A. Pat. Oct. 14, 1884 Jan. 20, 1885'' in two lines, ''-Nickel Steel Barrel-/Especially for Smokeless Powder'' in two lines, and ''33 W.C.F.'' and an oval Winchester proofmark just ahead of juncture with blued steel receiver, which has an adjacent matching proofmark and marked ''Model 1886/-Winchester/Trademark Reg. in U.S. Pat. Off.'' on top tang and the serial number on lower tang; blued sliding bolt; blued tubular half-magazine; blued steel nosecap and crescent buttplate on oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1912. Condition is fine, the barrel and magazine tube retaining 85% smooth original blue; the receiver retaining 20% blue mixed with smooth brown age patina; the nosecap retains much toned blue; the hammer and operating lever with 20% silvered case coloring. Forestock is smooth and sound showing straight grain and nice color, buttstock (and possibly buttplate) a modern replacement. Action is smooth; bore is moderately etched and clean with pronounced rifling. The '86 was one of Teddy Roosevelt's favorite rifles. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (C&R)
