Winchester Model 1895 .40-72 SN: 20246
This Rare Model 1895 chambered in .40-70 was manufactured in 1899. It has a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and elevation adjustable semi-buckhorn sporting style rear sight on a 26" tapered octagonal barrel marked with the caliber designation on the top barrel flat. The top of the barrel and the frame both have the two-line address and patent dates. The upper tang is marked with the model and trade mark information, and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Scalloped receiver, two-piece lever. It is fitted with a smooth Schnabel tip forearm with ebony insert and straight wrist stock with steel crescent buttplate. The wrist has nice hand checkered panels, period done. The .40-72 cartridge was a hold-over from the black powder era and only few Model 1895s were chambered for the cartridge. Most of those seen chambered for .40-72 are from the earlier years of production. The bore is fair to good, bright with good rifling, has some scattered light pitting, the lever action is smooth, the barrel is a dull bull with edge wear, the receiver has turned mostly a gray/brown patina with traces of blue and the wood is overall good/sound with some minor scratches, small dents and the left lower forearm has a area of many small dents.
