Winchester Model 70 7mm Newton SN: 23487
Heavy barrel bolt action rifle chambered in 7mm Newton, manufactured circa 1939. Barrel is approx 26.5" long, with a gradual straight taper, front sight ramp (dovetail filled with a blank), drilled and tapped on top for mounting a scope base (absent), marked "V GIPSON" center top and "7MM NEWTON" on left side over chamber. Action has a dovetail type scope base on receiver ring, and a Griffin & Howe scope mount on left side, with brass rings, mounting a 13.25" long Lyman Alaskan 2.5x scope with fine crosshair and clear view. Rear lens cover is leather cap, front is an aluminum thread-on type marked "R.A. LITSCHERT / 4". Stock is a classic sporter type with 13" length of pull, pistol grip, cheek piece, checkering at wrist & forend, steel grip cap, sling swivel studs, black (appears ebony wood) tip, thin rubber buttplate. Bore is in good condition, dark with strong rifling; may improve with cleaning. Bluing is 85% with bare metal showing at muzzle, at rub line on barrel right side, at scope levers, patina spots forming on barrel where handled. Brass scope rings show thinning or loss of black finish, with rear ring almost entirely showing yellow. Triggerguard is turning gray; edges of bottom metal show bare metal. Buttplate appears compressed, with top edge no longer in alignment with the lines of the stock. Forend tip has shrunk slightly and shows streaks of dark brown coloration. Stock has small dings and dents, mostly at butt. Condition is Very Good ***C&R Firearm*** [From the Jim Wilkinson Rifle Ranch Collection]
