CAPSTICK & COHELEACH: Priceless Book/Art Collection Generously Donated by Fiona Capstick and Renowne
Guy COHELEACH, internationally renowned American wildlife artist known who is especially acclaimed for his paintings of the cat family, features prominently in this donation and its personal links to key figures in the history of African safari and wildlife art. COHELEACH's original preliminary pencil sketch of his 1997 oil painting of a leopard entitled "Sunspots" accompanies the 2/450 limited edition framed print of the painting. Such sketches are not usually donated during the lifetime of an artist. Both the pencil sketch and the print are dedicated, signed and dated by the artist to the late Adelino SERRAS PIRES, a pioneer of the African safari industry in Mozambique and Life Sponsor of the Dallas Safari Club. The framed print is signed and dated by Adelino on the reverse which also carries an authentication certificate and a detailed description of the painting. Included is a pristine copy of the 1982 volume "THE BIG CATS: The Paintings of Guy Coheleach", a lavish, full-colour production signed and dated by the artist. The study, which contains exquisite pencil sketches alongside many of the paintings, includes such rarities as the snow leopard and the clouded leopard as well as detailed, high-standard information, distribution maps, a comprehensive bibliography and index. Accompanying the above items is the controversial, profusely illustrated and updated autobiography of Adelino SERRAS PIRES, "THE WINDS OF HAVOC: A Memoir of Adventure and Destruction in Deepest Africa" (2012) written by his widow Fiona CAPSTICK . The book affords close insight into the man to whom COHELEACH personalized the pencil sketch and framed print. Concluding this package is a signed, uniquely numbered, all-leather, gilt-edged, silk endpaper limited edition of "THE LAST IVORY HUNTER: The Saga of Wally Johnson" (1988) by Peter Hathaway CAPSTICK and from his personal library. The book centers on Mozambique and the frontispiece of an elephant was painted by Guy COHELEACH especially for the limited edition. This book made publishing history when it was used to relaunch the famed Derrydale Press after it was forced to close during World War II. The donation, in brief, brings together with visual and written impact, a triumvirate of artistic skill, high adventure and undiluted courage. 100% OF AUCTION PROCEEDS BENEFIT DSC FOUNDATION (DSCF).
