Collection from the Personal Archives of Peter Hathaway Capstick & 3-Day Hunting/Touring Package in
FIONA CAPSTICK & CAPE TOWN HUNTING SAFARIS - A BREATH FROM THE VELDT is one of the most significant illustrated books of the 19th century on African travel and hunting south of the Limpopo River and is the centrepiece of this splendid collection from the personal archives of the late Peter Hathaway CAPSTICK. Published in 1895 in London, this fabululous book was written and illustrated by the celebrated English writer and painter, John Guille MILLAIS. This folio-sized tome in very good condition and bearing the CAPSTICK book plate, contains full-page etchings and numerous other illustrations of South African game animals and their habitat. The accompanying text brings alive in sometimes controversial detail the African bush, its splendid wildlife and the people who shared that world over 123 years ago. This collector's item is enhanced by an exceptional array of 26 board-mounted illustrations taken from another first-edition of the book in question. All the illustrations are authenticated on the reverse side as coming from Peter CAPSTICK's archives. Three identically framed hand-coloured lithographed plates of the blesbok, sable antelope and klipspringer crown this unusual package and are also authenticated as to their CAPSTICK provenance. The lithographs are taken from one of the truly rare items of Africana, the four-volume BOOK OF ANTELOPES by Sclater and Thomas, published in London in 1894. All three animals are inextricably linked to the southern African bushveld.

Crowning this visual feast centered on South Africa is a 3-day touring/hunting package for two donated by Joe da Silva of Cape Town Hunting Safaris. This package includes a 1-day springbok hunt for one hunter and one non-hunter, taxidermy work for a shoulder mount, 1-day tour of the spectacular Cape Peninsula and 1-day wine or culture tour in Cape Town.
