GORDY & SONS: Original Oil Painting by David Southgate
From the personal library of Peter Hathaway Capstick, the following are donated for auction at "Heritage" 2020 Convention in benefit of DSCF: 1) One of the increasingly rare cornerstones of any serious library devoted to African hunting and adventure is the sumptuous tome "GREAT AND SMALL GAME OF AFRICA: An account of the distribution, habits and natural history of the sporting mammals, with personal hunting experiences" edited by H.A Bryden and published by the venerable Rowland Ward and Co., Ltd., London in 1899 - a solid 121 years ago - in a very small print run of only 500 copies. Less than half of this first edition are believed to still exist and even fewer copies are in complete and good condition and still in private hands. Peter Hathaway Capstick's handsome copy is for the serious collector. 2) Full color Rowland Ward map of the game animals of Africat. The fifteen hand-coloured plates of African game animals, protected by tissue guards, are unusually bright. The copiously illustrated contents, replete with fine hunting narratives and scientific observations by great personalities of the day such as Frederick Selous, Lord Delamere and Arthur Neumann, are bound in hand-tooled Moroccan leather with gilt titles on the spine. Peter's bookplate authenticates its powerful provenance. 3) This remarkable tome is accompanied by professionally photographed reproductions of the fifteen hand-coloured plates, all mounted on cream canvas. 4) An original framed pen-and-ink sketch of a dainty steinbok, signed and dated by the renowned African wildlife artist, Dino Paravano, accompanies the foregoing items. This sketch appeared in Peter's eighth book, LAST HORIZONS: Hunting Fishing and Shooting on Five Continents, published by St. Martin's Press Inc. of New York in 1988.5) Fiona has provided Peter's signed personal copy of the limited edition of this book, produced by the famed American company, The Derrydale Press, published in 1989. Bound in full red leather with gold moiré silk endpapers and all edges gilt, this book has potent association value. One of Peter's books was selected in 1988 to actually relaunch The Derrydale Press after it was forced to close down during the Second World War. An artistic and literary celebration of the African hunting safari experience. PROCEEDS BENEFIT DSC FOUNDATION (DSCF).
